Professionals guide to our Service

Primary Care: Provision of Long Acting Contraception

If you are interested in offering LARC in your local area please send an expression of interest e-mail to Provide Contracts Team using the address provide.contracts@nhs.net. We will then supply you with a pack containing all details of the subcontract and related procedure including payment rates and process, training prerequisites and data & monitoring requirements.

GP Practices can contract with Provide to offer the following services:

·     Administration of Intra-uterine contraceptive devices and systems (IUCD/S)

·     Sub-dermal implants procedure

·     Chlamydia Screening

Once signed up to the subcontract all LARC activity information should be submitted using the activity return forms which are available under ‘documents and resources’ section below and should be returned to shgpactivityclaim@nhs.net within 7 days of the close of the month of which the activity relates to.

LARC Training for Professionals

The service is able to provide training and support to Healthcare professionals working in Primary Care who want to develop the skills to carry out specialist contraception procedures or who have previously carried out this work and would like an opportunity to update their knowledge.

Our training is linked to national accreditation through the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and involves an element of preparatory work.

To register your interest please complete the Practice Training Request form from the ‘documents and resources’ section below and send the completed form to PROVIDE.EssexSexualHealthService@nhs.net. Our support staff will then get in touch to let you know about any preparation work and the training schedule.

Primary Care: Clamydia Screening

Chlamydia Screening

GP Practices who sign up to provide Chlamydia Screening for their patients should report activity directly to the National Chlamydia Screening Office.  

To order test kits please complete an order form and email this to the service Intelligence Centre at  provide.thurrocksexualhealthservice@nhs.net

Kits are shipped as a set of 10x Male and/or Female test kits, maximum order is one set of each, please allow 10 working days for delivery.  

Training from Brook

Brook Training for people who work with young people

Brook training is designed to create a stimulating learning environment which encourages reflection, the challenge of assumptions, sharing of best practice and personal development. All training is underpinned by young people’s views and will better equip you to work with young people. This training will benefit anyone who works with young people in health, education and social care.  The following courses are available:

SHIELD (Sexual Health Information Empowerment Learning and Development)

Young people may require support for their sexual health at any time. Learning the basics will allow you to support them initially before potentially signposting them on to a suitable service.

 This training aims to introduce professionals to basic topics around sexual health and relationships.

 Participants will be able to:

  • list the different methods of contraception
  • identify sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and know how to prevent them
  • develop skills to support young people to achieve safe, healthy, happy relationships and sex
  • explain confidentiality, consent and the law
  • Identify sexual health and wellbeing services (including Brook) to signpost young people to

Porn, Sex and Pressure

 This one-day course aims to enable participants to gain knowledge and skills about the influences and pressures young people face as they develop and explore their emerging sexuality.

By the end of the training, participants will have gained knowledge and understanding of:

  • The messages young people receive that influence their sexual life, relationships and self-esteem
  • The potential impact of modern media (including social networks, pornography and celebrity culture) and key messages to support young people to negotiate it safely
  • How to support young people to make informed choices about their sexual life including saying no to sex they don’t want
  • How to encourage young people to think about the importance of positive friendships to build self-esteem

eC-Card Training

The new eC-Card is now available for young people in Essex (excluding Southend) and Thurrock. When attending this training, professionals will gain knowledge on the new app and how to support young people to access it. This includes information about becoming
a distribution centre or a c-card assessor.

The training course covers the following outcomes;

  • To provide professionals with an understanding of the new eC-Card app and how it operates
  • To provide professionals with information regarding becoming a distribution centre for young people to access and the role of the distribution centre.
  • To enable professionals to become c-card assessors
  • A look at the Fraser guidelines and Sex and the Law

Brook’s training is designed to be interactive and discussion-based whilst consistently demonstrating how best to support young people.

Training from THT

Terrence Higgins Trust professionals Training programmes

Terrence Higgins Trust is able to offer HIV & Sexual Health training programmes to professionals working with groups and communities that may be at a higher risk of poor sexual health outcomes. Training programmes are held within Thurrock and include:

HIV Today: This half-day training programme is designed to update professionals knowledge surrounding HIV testing, treatment and transmission. This package also looks at living with HIV as well as stigmas and myths that surround the virus.

An Introduction to Sexual Health: This training programme equips attendees with a base level knowledge of sexual health and covers elements of sex & the law, relationship & sex education, gender & sexuality, STI’s and contraception. This training is held over half a day.

THT Thurrock is also able to provide ‘in-house’ training sessions to professionals which can be further tailored to fit the needs and time constraints of teams and services within Thurrock.
